The New Orleans Women & Children’s Shelter was in their old building in the 7th Ward when I got a call that they needed a design plan, drafting, and an interior designer to come assist with selections on a new commercial kitchen that my church was financially providing. So, I initially came up with a design for their old location. The landlords would not allow them to change the century-old home that they were leasing, and we would have also had to get approval from the historical district. That kitchen was unsafe and dilapidated. So the plans were scrapped, and the project was shut down for about 6 months. Then I got a call and I was notified that the Women’s Shelter had purchased a hotel, which would allow them to serve double the women and children that they were serving. I was asked to come back in on the project. I was excited for them. I was informed that they were still going to need a commercial kitchen and a place to eat to serve their unhoused women and children. The hotel only had a coffee bar. So, I got to work and created a whole new set of plans for remodeling a kitchen and dining/meeting space. The plans were completed in September 2024.
